PGN instruction page

General instructions: In order to view our games online it is necessary to use a PGN viewer. Since we don't have our own we can use a free third party program. PGN stands for portable game notation. The PGN program we are using is KNIGHTVISION from Glenn Wilson. It is a very simple program to use. The user interface is like many computer chess programs. It uses arrow buttons to go through the game moves. Simply use your computer mouse and click on the arrow buttons. Now, since most of the games on this site will not already be shown in the PGN viewer, you will have to do it on your own. The process is not difficult at all. On this site you will find different pages. The pages will be labeled Earl Clary Jr. division, Division II, and Division III preliminary Swiss. These pages will contain our games organized by division and date/round.

To play through the game you want, follow these steps.

1. find the game you want by searching the game data pages from the appropriate division.

 2. copy all the info from one game to your computer clipboard. look for a bracket symbol  " [ EVENT " that is the starting point. Just left mouse click, hold and drag from the beginning and highlight to the end of the game result, 1-0.   When every thing is highlighted, right click and click on copy.  Only copy one game at a time.  This is what you will paste into the PGN viewer.

 3. Next, go to the KnightVision PGN viewer/publisher link. The link is provided on the right-hand side of this page.

 4. Once you are on the KnightVision page follow the instructions. You are just going to paste the copied clipboard info into the window provided and click on the PREVIEW button. You may have to scroll down to find the PREVIEW button.  The game should appear in the viewer ready to play.  There are some options to play with.

That should do it.

If you own a computer program that can handle the PGN format then you should be able to import the games to it.

Because the PGN format is like a list of chess moves, like a chess score sheet you can use a physical set and play through the games offline as well.

  1. HERE IS AN IMPORTANT AND HELPFUL TIP : WHEN YOU GO TO CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS UNDER THE "PAGES" HEADING, LEFT CLICKING WILL OPEN THE LINK IN THE SAME TAB- BUT THIS WILL CLOSE THE PAGE YOU WERE VIEWING.

TO OPEN THE LINKS IN A NEW TAB, "RIGHT" CLICK THE LINK AND SELECT "OPEN IN A NEW TAB". THIS WILL KEEP THE OTHER PAGES OPEN. HAVING TWO TABS OPEN WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO GO BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE KNIGHT VISION PGN VIEWER PAGE AND THE PGN SOURCE FILES PAGES -PL.
